She survived her own execution. This is The Gospel Briefing. I'm Charles King. Christa Pike is alive this morning. Fifty years old. Conscious. Speaking. Handcuffed to a Tennessee hospital bed. Six days ago, the state tried to execute her for the nineteen ninety-five killing of her classmate Colleen Slemmer. Two doses of pentobarbital. She did not die. Her arms were left burned and blistered. Her attorneys call the recovery medically unprecedented. Governor Bill Lee has halted all further executions and ordered a third-party review. Pike's lawyers are in court today, seeking an order to preserve drug lot numbers and records from the September thirtieth attempt. Senator Marsha Blackburn, running to replace Lee, is urging the state to explore other execution methods. Now the legal questions begin. Can the state try again? A Fordham law professor who has studied this for thirty-six years says Pike is the first person in American history to survive after the lethal drug was administered. Every step was carried out. She just didn't die. This is why it matters now. Christians have long disagreed about capital punishment itself. But Scripture is clear. Even those who have done terrible things remain image-bearers of God. And the authorities who wield the sword do so under His eye. Proverbs sixteen, verse eleven. "A just balance and scales are the Lord's; all the weights in the bag are his work." The state does not get to be careless with a human life, even one it has condemned. If you want to sit with this, open Proverbs sixteen in Bible Copilot and read slowly before you form an opinion. Overseas now, with American hands on it. U.S. forces on Okinawa are under a forty-eight-hour alcohol ban and a thirty-day midnight curfew. A twenty-year-old Marine, Lance Corporal Devin Jacob Ballard, has been arrested on suspicion of killing thirty-nine-year-old Anna Yagi at a hotel in Naha and stealing her belongings. He denies the allegations. Okinawa's governor told Japan's defense minister the case has caused deep anxiety, and said discipline and human rights education within the U.S. forces are, quote, "not functioning at all." Fifty-four thousand American troops serve in Japan. Most are on this island. First Peter two, verse twelve. "Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable." The believers you know who serve in uniform carry that weight. Pray for them today by name. Pray for wisdom today before you repeat what you have heard. To Maine. Senator Susan Collins and Democrat Troy Jackson debated last night in a race that could decide control of the Senate. Collins pointed to her five terms and her breaks with President Trump on tariffs, on Iran, on the Big Beautiful Bill. Jackson countered that voting against a bill after voting to advance it is, quote, "like an arsonist bringing a cup of water." Both candidates called the ICE shooting of a Maine man during a summer traffic stop horrific. They split sharply on what to do about it. Ecclesiastes seven, verse twenty. "Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins." A ballot is never a vote for a savior. It is a vote for a steward. This episode is presented by Bible Copilot. Our verse today is Ecclesiastes seven, verse twenty. Open Bible Copilot and study the Verse of the Day first. You'll get a guided walk through what the passage says, what it means, what it teaches about God, and how to apply it. Three questions a day are free. Start at mybiblecopilot dot com slash gospel. That applies to the woman in the Tennessee hospital. The Marine in a Japanese jail. The senators on a Maine stage. And to you and me. Which is why we need a Savior who was righteous for us. Thanks for listening to The Gospel Briefing. The systems of this world will fail. The throne of grace never does. We'll see you tomorrow.
