A Congressional Seat, Measles Deaths, Canada's Tariffs

A congressional seat flipped overnight. Barely anyone noticed. This is The Gospel Briefing. I'm Charles King. Voters in Georgia's thirteenth congressional district went to the polls Tuesday. They were filling the seat of the late Representative David Scott, a Democrat who held that district for more than two decades. Two Democrats had advanced from the July runoff: Marcye Scott, the congressman's daughter, and Everton Blair, a former Gwinnett County board of education member. Neither cleared fifty percent on July twenty-eighth. According to The Hill, Marcye Scott lost. Everton Blair takes the seat through the end of the year. In November, Democrat Jasmine Clark, a state lawmaker who won the primary for the full term, will face Republican Jonathan Chavez. Why it matters. A daughter ran to hold her late father's seat. Voters said no. That's not a scandal. That's a district quietly refusing to treat public office as an inheritance. Scripture is careful here. Health officials confirmed the deaths Tuesday. No further details on the individuals have been released. These are the first measles deaths in the United States this year. And this year is on track to be the worst for measles cases since 1991. Governor Josh Shapiro warned about the outbreak and about vaccine misinformation. He said he spoke bluntly with Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Junior about the rhetoric coming from government officials. Christians land in different places on medical decisions. That's real. But Proverbs eighteen says the one who states his case first seems right, until another comes and examines him. In an age of confident voices online, wisdom is slower. Ask questions. Consult actual doctors. Love your neighbor enough to think carefully. Pray for wisdom today before you repeat what you have heard. Second story. Canada announced tariffs of up to fifty percent on twenty billion dollars in U.S. imports Tuesday, matching the Trump administration's recent tariffs. Ontario Premier Doug Ford told CBS, quote, we just want a fair trade deal. The consequences land on both sides of the border. Higher prices. Strained supply chains. Farmers and small manufacturers absorb the hit first. James chapter four asks where quarrels come from. From passions at war within us. Nations are not exempt from that diagnosis. Pray for negotiators on both sides. And for a household budget that can weather what leaders decide above it. One practice for today.
