$40 Trillion Debt, Deadly Midair Crash, WH Helipad

Forty trillion dollars. That's official. This is The Gospel Briefing. I'm Charles King. The question this morning — what does faithfulness look like when your country is spending money it doesn't have? Here are the facts. On August eighteenth, the Treasury Department confirmed the national debt crossed forty trillion dollars. That's more than double what it was in 2017. Less than a decade to double. The federal government now spends more servicing that debt than it spends on national defense. More than Medicare. Net interest payments approached one trillion dollars in 2025 — about fourteen percent of all federal spending. Michael Peterson of the Peterson Foundation put it plainly. Twenty-six straight years of deficits. Structural problems both parties have known about, and both parties have ignored. His foundation estimates the debt could hit fifty trillion in six years without serious reform. Economists disagree on how dangerous this is. Some say a strong economy carries the load. Others say one recession, one war, one shock, and challenge becomes crisis. Here's the frame. Proverbs twenty-two, verse seven — "The borrower is the slave of the lender." A midair collision last night near Carlisle Airport killed a small-plane pilot and injured two state troopers. Around seven fifty p.m., a Cessna one-fifty and a Pennsylvania State Police Bell four-oh-seven helicopter collided during what officials called routine training. Acting Commissioner George Bivens said the Cessna veered right at the last moment and struck the helicopter from behind, hitting the tail rotor and main rotor. The pilot did not survive. Both troopers were briefly trapped in the wreckage before getting out. Governor Josh Shapiro said they're expected to recover, and he asked Pennsylvanians to pray. So we do. President Trump gave reporters a tour of the new granite helipad going in on the White House South Lawn. Estimated cost — five to six million dollars. Sikorsky, the maker of Marine One, is paying much of it through a contribution to the National Park Service. Trump said he and others are chipping in. He signed his name on a slab that will be hidden inside the eagle on the U.S. seal. Christians will read this differently. Some see private funding for a public need. Others see a signature that raises questions about what the White House is and whom it belongs to. Ecclesiastes one is worth sitting with — every generation builds, every generation passes. Pray for wisdom today before you repeat what you have heard. And pray for those in authority, as First Timothy two commands, without treating any of them as your hope.
