BBC Subpoenas Trump Family, and a CEO Killer Pleads Guilty

A defamation case just got personal. The BBC is trying to subpoena President Trump's own family. His son. His daughter. His son-in-law. Which raises today's question: when powerful people fight in court over words, what does a Christian owe the truth of what was actually said? This is The Gospel Briefing. I'm Charles King. Court filings this week show that back in May, BBC lawyers tried to serve subpoenas on Donald Trump Junior, Ivanka Trump, and Jared Kushner. The BBC is defending itself against the president's ten billion dollar defamation suit. At issue: a Panorama episode that spliced together two different sections of the speech he gave outside the Capitol on January sixth, two thousand twenty-one. The BBC has already apologized for the edit. They admit it left the impression the president had directly called for violence. They deny that rises to defamation. Now they want testimony from family reportedly present when the speech was revised and delivered. According to the filing, Jared Kushner even drafted a proposed statement condemning violence. Serving those subpoenas has not gone smoothly. One representative was turned away at a police checkpoint in Florida. Another was told at Trump Tower that the person who handles legal documents may have been at lunch. That is in the filing. Trial is set for February two thousand twenty-seven. Here is what stands out. This case is about editing. About what someone actually said versus what viewers were led to believe he said. Scripture takes that seriously. One father of a first-deployment sailor told CBS News, quote, they should not be deployed this long. There is no clean take here. Sailors serve. Presidents decide. Families wait. Scripture honors the soldier and it commands the leader. Proverbs twenty-seven, verse twenty-three: know well the condition of your flocks. That lands on anyone with authority over other people. Pray for those sailors today, even if you don't know their names. God does. Finally. Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty Friday in federal court to stalking charges tied to the two thousand twenty-four killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. He admitted killing him. Remember what this case became. Parts of the internet treated the shooter like a folk hero after a husband was murdered in broad daylight. That is not normal, and Christians should not pretend it is. Romans twelve, verse nineteen: never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God. Vengeance dressed as justice is still vengeance. A courtroom is doing its work. Let it.
