Vance described the agreement between the United States and Iran that President Trump may release before Friday. Vance told reporters the deal is "very general," meaning the details — and there are a lot of details when you're talking about a nuclear program, sanctions, regional proxies, and a war that has dominated American foreign policy for the better part of a year — will be worked out later. A page and a half. Now, I'm not here to tell you whether this deal is good or bad. We don't know yet. And honestly, neither does anyone else, because most of it hasn't been written. Christians of good conscience are going to land in different places on this one, and that's fine. But here's what I keep coming back to. We live in a moment where world leaders announce historic agreements before the agreements actually exist. Where the headline arrives before the substance. Where peace is declared on Monday and negotiated on Thursday. Proverbs 14:15 says, "The simple believes everything, but the prudent gives thought to his steps." That's not cynicism. That's wisdom. Be glad if there's a path away from war with Iran. Pray for it. But hold the celebration loosely until you see what's actually on the paper. And remember — Psalm 146 tells us not to put our trust in princes, in mortal man, in whom there is no salvation. Treaties are good. Treaties are not gods. The G-Seven leaders are meeting in France today, by the way, and this Iran announcement is overshadowing the war in Ukraine. One crisis crowding out another. That's the world we're living in. [TRANSITION] Eight people are dead after a United States Air Force B-Fifty-Two bomber crashed in California on Monday morning. The aircraft was on a routine test mission. Routine. That word is going to haunt eight families this week. Husbands, wives, parents, children — woke up yesterday expecting a normal day. And by lunchtime, the phone rang. The investigation is just beginning. We don't know yet what failed. We may not know for months. I want to be careful here, because there's a temptation when something like this happens to immediately reach for a verse and tie a bow on it. Don't do that. Eight families are grieving. They are image-bearers of God, loved by a Father who collects every tear. [TRANSITION] Here's a sentence I did not expect to read this week. Voting officials across the country are worried that the Department of Homeland Security — the very agency tasked with helping protect American elections — may now be a threat to them. That's reporting from NPR. State and local election officials told reporters they fear DHS will no longer be a partner in securing the vote, but instead may be used to challenge or undermine results the administration doesn't like. Now, I want to be careful. This is a fear, not a confirmed action. We'll see how it plays out as primaries unfold today in Georgia, Alabama, and Washington D.C. But the fear itself is the story. Because trust in elections is the connective tissue of a republic. Once it tears, it does not stitch back together quickly. Here's the biblical principle, and it cuts in every direction. Proverbs 11:1 says, "A false balance is an abomination to the Lord, but a just weight is his delight." God cares about honest measurement. He cares about honest counting. Whether it's a merchant's scale in ancient Israel or a ballot box in modern Atlanta — the principle is the same. Truthful counting is a moral act. Christians on the right, Christians on the left — we should all want every legal vote counted, and only legal votes counted. That's not a partisan position. That's a biblical one. Pray for the people running your local elections. Most of them are neighbors doing thankless work for very little money. They deserve our prayers and our patience.
